A review on carbon fiber-reinforced hierarchical composites: mechanical performance, manufacturing process, structural applications and allied challenges

The utilization of carbonaceous reinforcement-based polymer matrix composites in structural applications has become a hot topic composite research. Although conventional carbon fiber-reinforced (CFRPs) have revolutionized the industry by offering unparalleled features, they are often plagued with weak interface and lack toughness. However, promising aspects fiber-based fiber hybrid hierarchical can compensate for these setbacks. This review provides meticulous landscape recent progress matrix-based different (carbon fiber, nanotube, graphene, nanodiamond) fillers reinforced composites’ mechanical properties. First, performance neat CFRP was exhaustively analyzed, attributing parameters were listed down, CFRPs’ barriers clearly outlined. Here, short thermoplastic distinguished as prospective material. Second, strategic advantages over elucidated. Third, based on nanotube (1D), graphene (2D) nanodiamond (0D) expounded evaluated against CFRP. Fourth, comprehensively discussed fabrication methods, categorized them according to suggested potential future directions. From here, sorted out three-dimensional printing (3DP) most futuristic method thoroughly delivered its pros cons context aforementioned materials. To conclude, applications, current challenges prospects pertinent materials elaborated.
